Walk into any Maharashtrian household in December and you’ll likely find a tin of dink laddoo on the kitchen shelf. It’s one of those sweets passed down more as a remedy than a dessert — and there’s real substance behind the tradition.

What is dink, exactly?

Dink (also called gond, or edible gum) is a resin harvested from the bark of certain trees, most commonly the babul tree. When fried in ghee, it puffs up into light, crisp nuggets that are then ground and mixed into the laddoo base. In Ayurvedic and folk tradition, it’s considered warming and strengthening — which is exactly why it’s eaten in winter and recommended for new mothers recovering after childbirth.

Why pair it with methi (fenugreek)?

Fenugreek seeds are bitter on their own, but slow-roasted and ground into a laddoo with jaggery and ghee, that bitterness mellows into a deep, nutty flavour. Fenugreek has long been used in Indian households to support digestion and lactation — another reason this combination shows up so often in postnatal diets.

Is Dink-Methi laddoo healthy?

Compared to a typical mithai made with refined sugar and maida, yes — by a wide margin. Our version uses only jaggery (no refined sugar), pure ghee, and whole ingredients: cashew, almond, coconut, dried dates and nutmeg. It’s calorie-dense, so portion size matters, but it’s a far cleaner indulgence than most packaged sweets.
